Forrest Justin Smith Jr. was born on January 9, 1935, in Hugo, Colorado. His
life was marked by warmth, sincerity, and a deep dedication to his wife,
family, and friends. Sadly, Forrest passed away at his home in Castle Rock,
Colorado, on July 21, 2024.
Forrest is survived by his wife, Alice; their four children Pamela Hutton,
Kathleen Martinez (Kenny), Daniel (Bonnie Lower), Charles Smith; their seven
grandchildren Beau (Heather), Scott, Chris (Ashley), Campbell, Kelly Roden
(Emory), Susan Hutton (Cal Hueber), Jacob Hutton (Merideth); and six great-
grandchildren Ryland, Haylee, Brooks, Bearett Smith; and Reagan and Ryder
Roden. Forrest is predeceased by his parents Neva and Forrest Sr.
Forrest was deeply committed to public service. After earning a bachelor’s
degree from Colorado State University, he became a licensed Professional
Engineer and embarked on a notable career as a Civil Engineer with the
Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). Even 30 years after his
retirement, his contributions and character are fondly remembered by the
CDOT community.
An avid outdoorsman, Forrest found joy in the serene landscapes of
Colorado. His 35 acres of land were a testament to his love for country life
and served as a playground and sanctuary for his grandchildren. Their
cherished memories of adventures—hunting,
egg hunts, and family gatherings with their “Bumpy”—will be treasured
forever.
Many will remember how Forrest loved caring for horses. Together with his
son Charles, he established “Smith Show Horses,” and raised world-
champion show horses whose lineages are well-known in today’s Appaloosa
community.
As we re?ect on Forrest’s life, we are reminded of the profound impact one
individual can have on so many. His unwavering integrity, kindness, honesty,
and generosity touched everyone he met. He leaves behind a legacy of love
